Important tips for keeping your decks, wood siding and other wooden surfaces in good condition:
• Use a blower to remove leaves and organic matter from the wood as often as possible.
• Avoid letting debris build
up between deck boards or on any wood surface. It can trap moisture and cause fungus growth. Deck boards and substructure will rot if this is
left unaddressed.
A tool such as the "Deckhand" can help and is
recommended. Call CAL PRESERVING to order a Deckhand TM.
• Redirect sprinklers that hit the wood so they only water the plants. Don't over water plants on your deck. Avoid letting moisture persist on any wood surface as
water can cause fungus growth and damage wood.
• Put plants on raised platforms or trays with wheels. Move them one pot width to the left, right, front or back every month so moisture doesn’t gather as this will cause fungus to grow.
• Fungus can kill decks and wood siding. If you have fungus, CAL PRESERVING can often stop it and inhibit its regrowth for much less money than replacing the wood.
• Don't pressure-wash your deck or wood siding yourself as it is very easy to cause irreversible damage to wooden surfaces. CAL PRESERVING has highly trained technicians and will do it properly.
• Call CAL PRESERVING for advice about how to properly stain or preserve your deck or other wooden surfaces.
• Avoid the use of wood fillers of any kind on exterior (unpainted) wood.
• All wood has color inconsistencies. In the case of older wood this may be due to stain or preservative that's down in the wood and remains from years past. Many times more noticeable once a new coat of preservative is applied (even when the deck has been sanded).
• If you have any new wooden construction (decks, siding, fences etc.) preserving the wood soon after construction is completed is a good idea. Do not wait a month or more to do so unless it's raining.
• Clean and preserve your wood at least once
every two
years (and in many cases every year) to arrest deterioration.
